Getting Involved in Clinical Informatics at Your Institution
Make sure to check out our Roadmap for Application to see which of these steps make the most sense at your level of medical training!
Connect with IT
They can provide info about ongoing projects, mentorship, shadowing or volunteer opportunities. Look for contacts of physicians with “informatics” in their titles such as, “Medical Director of Informatics,” “Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO)”, or “Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO)."
Pursue Informatics Projects
If you have a specific interest or idea, consider proposing an informatics project to your department or mentors. This can be a great way to gain hands-on experience and make a tangible impact.

Participate in informatics-related seminars, workshops, and conferences at your institution (or nationally). These events offer opportunities to learn, network, and stay abreast of the latest advancements.
Start an Informatics Interest Group
If your institution does not have a medical student or resident interest group for informatics, consider starting one with a mentor to get connected with others at your university.
Join Informatics Committees
Explore opportunities to join informatics committees or task forces at your institution. These groups play a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare technology and offer a chance to contribute your unique perspective.
Industry Opportunities
The AMIA Clinical Informatics Fellows Industry Outreach arm holds regular sessions to meet physicians entrepreneurs, CMIOs, and physician leaders in industry both large and small to make connections and discuss insights as part of our "ACIF Meets Industry" Interactive Panel Discussion series. See the schedule for our next talk in our Master Calendar.
